“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.”
There are many little ways to enlarge a child’s world. Love of books is the best of all. With the noble and unique mission to instill a passion for reading and enhance creative imagination , DPS North Kolkata observed reading week between 9th– 13th September, 2019. A plethora of activities was held to celebrate the joy of reading in the school campus. The school’s soft boards were adorned with the outstanding and popular works of acclaimed writers of English and Bengali literature. Children irrespective of their grade in which they study participated in the event with zeal and fervor. They read the book assigned for their grade and prepared story charts to show the plot development, researched about the author and even designed book covers. Detailed and constructive discussions centering on the aspects of the story and the authors were done at length. It was great to find young children from the junior classes reading Roald Dahl, Robert Southey, Narayan Gangopadhaya, Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens with such energy and passion. The corridors of DPS were buzzing with discussions about the famous characters and their creators. The outcome of these planned activities was enriching as it encouraged the children to become avid readers and catered to the holistic development of the children. The reading week at DPS, North Kolkata was one of our many little ways to broaden a child’s world.
