On the 6th of April 2019 the teachers of DPS north Kolkata had the rare privilege to attend a workshop by Mr. Balasubhramaniam, ex- cbse director and resource person and a teacher in the truest sense of the term. Bala Sir conducted the workshop on Classroom management and the Role of a Teacher. The workshop began with the profound importance of World Health Day. “Health is the real wealth, not gold and silver”, Mahatma Gandhi. Bala sir emphasized that a teacher should possess a sound body along with a sound mind. Teacher should be an embodiment of unparalleled energy, vivacity and enthusiasm.

A teacher brings energy to the classroom; she provokes the curiosity of the child and allows his/her aspiring mind to soar high on the wings of his own poetry. Bala sir then quoted Guru Kabir Das and said, “A teacher affects eternity. He can never tell where his influence stops”. A teacher is revered as a Guru in Indian parlance; it is the teacher who acts as a lasting contributor to the progress of mankind. An ideal teacher is enthralled with the art and act of teaching.

Bala sir cited examples of great Indian teachers and patrons of learning. He said that the words of the teacher should be able to create wonders. He should walk into the class like a hero; should always stand in the class and have eye contact with his students. This creates a Funnel Effect. There should be congruence in his words and actions. Teaching is an art. Teacher’s position in the classroom and in front of the blackboard while writing and teaching is of vital importance. He stressed on Pedagogical Intelligence, sensitivity towards learners. Finally, Bala sir taught us the Purpose of Mind as proposed by Aristotle and the various methodologies involved in teaching.

The whole session, organized by Madhuban Publications was extremely rewarding and beneficial.
